A SICK Week Full Of Shattered Records

After kicking off the week with rain and abnormally low temps in the southeast, some thought SICK Week 2025 was doomed. However, by Day 5, South Georgia Motorsports Park was lit up with record passes and a huge portion of the field getting quicker each time out. At the top of the heap was Brett LaSala in his twin-turbo ’11 Mustang (“Snot Rocket 3.0”). On the final day of action, Brett got started with a 6.12 at 234 mph. His next pass? A 6.07 at 236 mph, besting the existing drag ‘n drive radial tire record he already held. Ed Ensor was also busy shattering records on Day 5, courtesy of his naturally aspirated ’85 Mustang. His 7.078 at 194 mph knocked his final average down to 7.096, lowering the NA record considerably (down from a 7.53).

Making Turbos Safe Again

It may have taken a few revisions to get the numbers they were after, but Apex Diesel has proven that a compressor wheel guard will not be a horsepower choke point—at least not in the 1,600 hp applications they’ve been playing with. In this particular case, more material left on the cross of the guard helped maintain boost and horsepower across the board. Apex reports that boost and drive pressure were also unhindered by the use of this specific rendition of the guard, although the company did disclose that in 2,000 hp and higher applications, compressor guards could become a noticeable restriction. This is the type of development that will allow engines to be as powerful as they’ve ever been while simultaneously making them much safer.

The Journey Of A 500,000-Mile Volkswagen TDI

ID Parts has long been the go-to place to order late-model VW TDI parts, but recently the Massachusetts company covered the story of its own, 500,000-mile, ’02 Jetta GL TDI Wagon. For anyone in the know, the 1.9L TDI (ALH) engine that came in these compact sedans (and wagons) has been coined the “Cummins” of the diesel car world—a title that it was awarded thanks to its tremendous reliability. And not only is the 1.9L TDI reliable, the engine proved to be the ultimate fuel-sipper. Knocking down 50-mpg is a cinch in these cars, especially if equipped with the five-speed manual. In the opinion of the folks at ID Parts, the ALH platform represents the best product VW ever created, thanks to their exceptional fuel economy, reasonable performance (even when stock), roominess (especially in hatchback or wagon form), and incredible durability.

Alright, Who Bought This Thing?!

It was graced with a compound turbo, D&J Street Performance common-rail Cummins, stretched, transformed into a crew cab, outfitted with suicide doors, displayed at the 2023 Performance Racing Industry trade show, and made hundreds of passersby stop and stare. Then the custom ’56 Ford F-600 from Classic Car Studio went for half a million dollars at the Barrett-Jackson auto show and no one has seen it since… The top-notch project also received products, support, and input from industry giants such as Dakota Digital, RideTech, Porterbuilt Fabrication, Firepunk Diesel, Exergy Performance, and even Sparc Industries.

New 7.3L Godzilla Crate Engines From Ford: 1000 Horsepower

$33,000. Thats the estimated price tag on Ford's latest crate engine, a 7.3L Godzilla gasser with a Whipple blower that'll shoot for north of 1000 horsepower. Ford has been watching the popularity of 7.3L Godzilla swaps and has apparently gone all in with this release. Dubbed the "Megazilla" the new powerplant will be packed with all the goodies. Callies forged H-beam rods, forged Mahle pistons, and whats been listed only as a "hot" cam. As the article in Car and Driver mentions, details on this crate motor are slim at the moment. No word as to the warranty, or exact pricing, nor when it'll be officially available. However, it has been listed as "for off road use only." Can't wait to see what this beast gets transplanted into!

Another Interesting Ford Patent: Bumper Air Bags

Ever seen shocks installed behind bumpers in 1970's cars? They thought adding shocks behind the bumper would reduce damage in a crash. This new patent seems reminiscent of that old tech.  This one is designed for pedestrian safety. If it sounds familiar, it should. This technology (or ones like it, at least) has been discussed a bunch over the last several years. The hope is that it will help reduce the impact to pedestrians when a car accidentally hits them. We'd assume the tech would rely on cameras to deploy the air bags before an actual impact occurs. Then instead of almost instantly deflating like the air bags in our steering wheels do, they'd stay inflated just a bit longer. But of course that's pure speculation as the patent doesn't discuss actual usage, only how the multiple bags would be secured.
