Transmissions, engines, chassis work, axles, roll cages, dyno time, burnouts… you name it Firepunk is doing it. Sean Vroom (we’re not kidding about the last name) recently made the 650-mile trip to corn country from Rocky Point (Long Island), New York for a few choice services. After some fine-tuning of Sean’s 5.9L common-rail, the folks at Firepunk squeezed 1,002-rwhp out of a 73mm Tater Built Garrett G42. Then to celebrate, Sean and his Ram paid a visit to the burnout pad out back for a nasty smoke show.

When these two diesel masterminds get together, wild, out-of-the-box things usually happen. Just take a look at that power plant bolted to Wagler Competition Products’ engine dyno. All indications are that it’s a 3.0L Duramax. You know, the aluminum block and head inline-six offered in GM half-tons (and that grind out an impressive 495 lb-ft of torque from the factory at the present time). If it’s common-rail, these two are always interested, and this engine’s ultra-high pressure injectors (36,000+ psi in stock form), as well as its structural makeup make it a solid platform to build horsepower with. Rumor has it this one is controlled via a MoTeC stand-alone ECU…

The biggest event of the year just grew a little larger. New for 2025, Firepunk is inviting 16 elite level racers to what it hopes will be a big Saturday night attraction. The “Seventy 2 Fast” (#Seventy2Fast) heads-up category details? Spec turbo from VS Racing (72/89/1.01 T4), instant green, chip-draw pairings, single elimination, no timeslips, and fuel-only. The class is open to any diesel engine with an air-to-air intercooler, and enforces a 6,000-pound minimum weight. The entry fee is $1,000 (includes VS Racing turbo and shipping) and the payout to the winner totals $5,000. To be considered, email a picture of your race truck to: lavon@firepunkdiesel.com.

Nick Bell’s new Pro Mod Ram is progressing nicely. The sub-3,600-pound, Cummins-powered half-ton made an appearance at Battle for the Thrones and, despite facing a driveshaft failure in the early going, was able to lay down some solid passes, meet a few owner-set goals, and collect invaluable data while at Rockingham. Since performing an unwanted wheel stand at Lights Out 16, it’s obvious that many of the truck’s chassis bugs have already been worked out. Rumor also has it Nick will be racing on both radials and slicks this season, which means he wants a lot of seat time!

Last weekend, Sterling Diesel Performance’s Dustin Sterling broke the record for fastest 4x4 Duramax in the eighth-mile. And he didn’t just creep past it—he drove right around the previous record (a 4.95 held by Dan Zelten) with a 4.79-second blast at 152 mph. You may also recognize this truck from the recent AWD vs. RWD and AWD shootouts hosted by Cleetus MacFarland. Dustin has been invited to these invite-only, no-prep affairs twice now—and by the looks of his recent 4.79 and 4.80 passes he definitely has what it takes to get the win. Keep your eye out for Mr. Sterling this summer, race season is only beginning.

The legal battles many in the diesel industry have gone through over the past decade or so are in no way news. However, as of late last week, the federal government seems to feel that the EPA and DOJ have been using the lawsuits as political weapons (their words, not ours). The Committee on Oversight just released a statement saying they'll be looking into the EPA and DOJ's handling of these cases. The letter mentions politically motivated enforcement, state laws being used in place of federal ones, and a bunch more. Many are thinking this will lessen the penalties on the accused. We're in no way going to speculate as to what this will mean as the committee hasn't completed their investigation, but it's interesting, to say the least.
