China: Diesel Declines, LNG Grows

According to a recent Reuters survey, diesel use in China is plummeting at a rate of potentially 7% this year, if trends continue. The reason? Liquified Natural Gas. The planet's largest user of crude oil has seen a large increase of LNG and electric-powered vehicle usage, and it doesn't look to be slowing. What's that mean for us? Lower fuel costs? Less diesel's, or more because of the lack of supply from China? It's really too early to tell, especially with an upcoming election. On a somewhat related note, in the US, the cost of diesel has been on a steady decline most of the year, with one of its largest drops happening last week. Let's hope there's a connection.

New Diesel Chassis Dyno Horsepower Record

Remember the days when everyone seemed to be chasing the 2000 hp with their diesel's? The struggle was real. But those days are long gone and a new bar has been raised by Greg Alberalla. After several 3khp+ dyno hits on the truck in testing, prior to running on Northwest Dyno Series' SuperFlow, once strapped to the SuperFlow Greg's truck put down 3337 hp this past weekend. That's just one horsepower shy of the previous record made by Justin Zeigler at Ultimate Callout Challenge, 3336 hp. Greg promises there's more to come from the 2005 Ram Cummins. We'll be watching.

The Next Humvee, A Diesel Hybrid?

New from GM Defense is their "Next Gen prototype" vehicle, which is rumored to be a possible replacement for the HMMWV (Humvee). The Next Gen is based on a Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD ZR2 platform and includes technology that allows for much quieter operation. Utelizing a hybrind diesel-electric system the vehicle can use electric when noise is a problem, and rely on diesel to extend it's range. The diesel engine? The 2.8L "baby-max". This new vehicle will cone in 2, 4 and 6 seat configurations. Here's what GM Defense President Steve duMont, had to say: “Our Next Gen vehicle is a game-changing mobility solution that delivers tactically significant capabilities by integrating GM’s proven commercial technologies. This rugged and highly capable diesel-powered vehicle offers tactical advantages, such as Silent Operations, exportable power, and increased range with extended mission duration.”

IRS Allows Ag Fuel Use On Road For Hurricane Relief

Released late last week, the IRS has temporarily removed penalties for using red-dye-diesel on the road for those impacted by the recent hurricanes, specifically in Florida. The relief, as they're calling it, will be available from 10.9.24 thru 10.30.24 and would reduce fuel costs for users by 24 cents a gallon. One question we have that wasn't addressed in the IRS's release: what happens stateside? Florida has their own taxes built into diesel fuel, including a $2500 fine for using red-dye/ag fuel on the highway. Here's to hoping the state will follow the IRS's lead.
